Ellen M. Pawlikowski, U.S. Air Force, and Ms. Mandy F. Vaughn, CEO and Founder, GXO, Inc. The virtual discussion will be moderated by Kari A. Bingen, director of the Aerospace Security Project and senior fellow with the International Security Program. The commercial space sector has expanded dramatically. Fueled by capital investments, technological advancements and entrepreneurialism in the private sector have given rise to a range of commercial space solutions that contribute to U.S. national security and economic competitiveness. Recognizing the need to leverage these capabilities, the Department of Defense (DoD) recently published a DoD Commercial Space Integration Strategy and the U.S. Space Force released a Commercial Space Strategy. However, a number of institutional barriers remain to turning these strategies into action. Pawlikowski and Vaughn will discuss a recent Defense Science Board study that they co-led, “Commercial Space System Access and Integrity,” which examined the DoD’s use of commercial space technology and services. They will talk about the opportunities that commercial space provides and the institutional changes necessary to enable greater adoption by the defense and national security communities. This event is made possible through general support to CSIS.
